Straw Vote in Favor of Full Funding

Last night the Board of Supervisors took a straw vote on fully funding the LCPS Budget.  The vote was 6-3 in favor of full funding; Delgaudio, Volpe, and Reid voted against.  Here are some of the facts from last night’s meeting:

1.       The tax rate will be set at $1.135.

2.       $10.8 million will be transferred to LCPS from anticipated surplus in order to fully fund the school budget.

3.       $7 million will be put into the LCPS Self Insured Health Care Fund.

4.       The tax rate will also provide additional funds to the Sheriff’s Department and county  libraries.

5.       All other county budgets will be fully funded.

The final vote will occur on April 1.  Send an email to loudounbudget@loudoun.gov to express your approval and thank the six Supervisors who voted for fully funding: Scott York, Janet Clarke, Matt Letourneau, Ralph Buona, Shawn Williams, and Geary Higgins.

This is a great victory for our students, LCPS staff, our community, and the Loudoun Education Association!  It is only through your hard work that this was accomplished.  This is the first fully funded LCPS Budget since 1998.  It is a testament to what we can accomplish when we organize and work together for a common goal.  This has been a two year quest; we laid the groundwork last year and are now, through continuing hard work, reaping the benefits.  Each of you who emailed, called, spoke privately or at a meeting, canvassed, signed petitions, and attended meetings should be proud of this accomplishment.  I know I am proud of each and every one of you.

Thank you,

Joey Mathews, President
Loudoun Education Association
