Yesterday, I got to stand on stage while the President signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the replacement for No Child Left Behind.
I was standing there representing you – the educators and allies who contacted Congress nearly half a million times.* It was such an immense honor and a proud moment for me, knowing how much we did to close the chapter that was No Child Left Untested.
Thank you for everything you did to advocate for our schools and students. I recorded a special thank you video. Please watch it here:
ESSA is a game changer. It’s not a perfect law, but it offers some huge steps forward, including:
- Elevating the voices of educators in the policymaking process
- Decoupling standardized testing from high-stakes decisions, and
- Creating an “opportunity dashboard” to help close opportunity gaps in needy schools
As President Obama said, now the real work begins. Laws are only as good as their implementation. We’ll be in touch with more specifics soon, but for now, I just wanted to celebrate this moment and your advocacy.
Please watch my video message here, and sign up if you want details on ‘what’s next’ after NCLB.
We did this together. Sí se puede, truly!
